nuraghe
"The most distinctive traces of Sardinia's prehistory are the bronze age conical stones know as nuraghi"
E.Blake
The most preminent feature of the Sardinian archaeological landscape is the nuraghe tower. Over 7000 of these monuments are still preserved today, attesting to important social developments in Sardinian Bronze Age society. The Sardinian word nuraghe means "heap" or "hollow", and derives from its mound-like appeareance of stacked rock. A number of key syntheses have been published on the nuragic towers .. (Michael J. Kolb,The archeology of mediterranean prehistory,Blakwell 1998)
